Supporting Women on Women’s History Month...

Mar 1, 2026

March is Women’s History Month, designated to honor and celebrate the history of women in America and around the world. Though sometimes overlooked, women’s history is incredibly rich, filled with stories of adversity, perseverance, strength, suffering, injustice, joy, brilliance, and everything in between. This carries over into today’s world, where women at every turn in life face equal parts adversity and success. The Salvation Army strives to support all local women facing adversity, whether it be housing insecurity, poverty, abuse trauma, inaccessible childcare, unemployment, or more.

Rent, Mortgage, and Utility Assistance

The Salvation Army Annapolis offers a wide array of Social Services and Emergency Services offerings that can be a massive help for struggling women and families in the community. This includes our Rent, Mortgage, and Utility Assistance effort, which provides funds and resources that help families keep their homes.

Housing insecurity is an epidemic across the United States, with tens of millions of households living paycheck to paycheck. Many of these households are single mothers and their children, or single women struggling to make ends meet. Too often, these households live with the indefinite worry that they may not have enough to get by in the near future and find every possible way to save funds and resources. These measures can become desperate—mothers skipping meals so their children have enough to eat, shutting off the heat in frigid temperatures, selling valuable and/or sentimental possessions in the hope that it can cover their housing expenses for long enough.

Rent, Mortgage, and Utility assistance can be a lifeline for any woman at risk of losing her home, such as the single mother struggling to afford rent and food for her young children, and the single woman who lost her job and is struggling to make ends meet while looking for a new job. By saving money on housing expenses, these women are able to allocate funds towards other essentials such as food, clothing, shoes, transportation, medicine, toiletries, sanitary products, childcare, and healthcare.

Feeding Programs & Emergency Food Pantry

We all know that food is one of the most crucial essentials for human health and well-being, both in everyday life and in the long term. It should always be accessible to all people, no matter their walk of life, but unfortunately, that’s not our reality. Quality, healthy food is becoming more and more of a luxury in everyday American life that only certain people can afford, leaving the poor and low-income with limited options.

This is an all too common struggle for low-income women, especially single mothers who are solely responsible for their children’s welfare. As touched on before, these women face the everyday fear of not having enough money for their families to get by and sometimes have to turn to desperate measures to save, including giving all their food to their children and going days without a real meal.

The Salvation Army Annapolis offers a series of feeding programs that help provide free, nutritious meals to women and families facing food insecurity. Our Emergency Supply Distribution and Disaster Feeding programs provide food and other emergency relief essentials to disaster survivors in the Annapolis area, alleviating the fear of not having anything to eat in the wake of a disaster such as a house fire. Our Emergency Food Pantry, open every Thursday, provides a 3- to 5-day supply of nutritious food and meals to all households facing food insecurity, including single mothers and their children.

These food programs provide peace of mind to women and other individuals facing housing and financial hardships, allowing them to dedicate their funds and resources towards other essential needs, such as rent, mortgage, and utility bills, as well as transportation, healthcare, childcare, and more.

Clothing Closet, Baby Pantry, & Hygiene Pantry

Food is one of many essentials that The Salvation Army Annapolis provides to women and families in need. In addition to our Emergency Food Pantry, we also have a Clothing Closet, Baby Pantry, and Hygiene Pantry.

Clothing can be very expensive, especially for single mothers who have to clothe their families in addition to themselves. Children are always growing and need new clothing and shoes to accommodate, which can add up cost-wise, even if their clothing is thrifted or heavily discounted. The same can apply to their mothers, who also need to dress themselves and may often need new clothing, too (weight loss/gain, maternity clothing, seasonal/weather changes, wear-and-tear, etc). The Clothing Closet at the Salvation Army Annapolis provides free, donated clothing for all ages, sizes, and genders, eliminating the expense altogether.

Our Baby and Hygiene Pantries are similar, providing free, applicable supplies to families and individuals in need, including women and their children. The Baby Pantry is always stocked with baby essentials—including clothing, diapers, blankets, bottles, toys, strollers, and sometimes even furniture like cribs, changing tables, and playpens. Added up, these items can ordinarily cost a fortune, adding even more financial stress that comes with raising a child as a low-income parent. Receiving free baby essentials can allow mothers to focus their money and energy on other childcare needs, such as daycare and healthcare.

The Hygiene Pantry provides free hygiene and toiletry products for families and individuals in need. For women, this includes soap, razors, toothbrushes and toothpaste, dental floss, haircare, basic skincare, feminine hygiene products, combs and hairbrushes, and more. Almost all the same applies to children. For a low-income single parent, free access to these basic essentials can make all the difference in the ability to afford other necessities, such as food, transportation, and housing expenses.

No matter the situation and no matter what resources are difficult to obtain, our Social Services programs can help make all the difference, providing free essentials that not only support women and neighbors in their day-to-day expenses, but in the long-term as they continue to work their way out of financial and/or housing insecurity. We are proud to help any and all families and individuals in need, including the women and mothers of Annapolis.
