A Look Into Salvation Army Annapolis Social Services

Jan 14, 2026

For over 150 years, The Salvation Army has been devoted to helping people in need across the United States. Through a variety of efforts and services, we are committed to helping anyone regardless of religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, or political affiliation.

Social services are among the most in-demand needs in the Annapolis community today. For many, making ends meet is a daily challenge, with families forced to choose between necessities like heating their homes or buying groceries on any given day, week, or month. With social services such as housing expense assistance and food pantries, we strive at The Salvation Army to provide the aid and resources needed to help affected families and individuals in the Annapolis area live safely and healthily.

Our range of social service offerings includes our clothing closet, baby pantry, hygiene pantry, emergency food pantry, and rent, mortgage, and utility assistance. Each of these offerings can make the difference between a family making rent one month, having warm clothes for the colder seasons, or even putting food on the table for the week. In 2024, The Salvation Army served nearly 28 million families nationwide with our social services.

A Single Mother’s Salvation

Ana Portillo is a single mother of two in the Annapolis area. When pregnant with one of her daughters, she was unemployed and struggling to find work. Alone with only herself as her support system, Ana was faced with the debilitating stress and panic of not being able to afford her living, medical, and baby expenses. “It is really hard here,” she begins. “I have two daughters, and I pay a babysitter. We have a lot of bills from the house, and the rent is really expensive.” She soon turned to The Salvation Army Annapolis for help.

“The first time I came in here… I was so happy because they helped me with a lot of things for my daughter, who was on her way,” she continues. “At the moment I wasn’t working… I was alone with the baby, so it was really helpful to know that I can rely on this foundation that helps me with the basic things I need.”

The Salvation Army Annapolis Corp’s Food Pantry and Baby Pantry made all the difference for Ana and her small family, providing them with free food and baby necessities, such as diapers, that allowed Ana to make rent and utility bills on time, stress-free.

“I’m really grateful for The Salvation Army because they’re always willing to help people with whatever they need.”
